Medicine Wheel – Ancient Wisdom

On natural cycles, the four directions and the wisdom of returning to ourselves.

Modern life is taking us further and further away from natural rhythms. As a result, we lose touch with ourselves and with the wisdom that nature offers. Ancient traditions, including the Medicine Wheel, offer a way back — to ourselves, to an understanding of natural rhythms and, through them, to a deeper sense of who we are.

Different forms of the Medicine Wheel appear in the traditions of some Indigenous peoples of North America, but they all share a deep connection between human beings, nature, and its cycles. The Medicine Wheel weaves together the symbolism of the cardinal directions, the seasons, the elements, plants, animals and stages of life, as well as our relationship with the world. It is a space for learning, healing, and personal and spiritual growth. It is a path of wisdom that leads us towards greater awareness, responsibility and inner balance.

The Medicine Wheel brings together two concepts — the wheel and medicine.

The wheel — or circle — is among the oldest symbols of life. Nature repeats it endlessly — in the changing seasons, the water cycle, the rhythm of day and night, and the cycles of birth, growth, maturation and death.

The circle symbolises the interconnectedness of all that exists and the constant movement between the visible and invisible, the physical and spiritual, birth and death. It shows that everything is connected and that we are all part of the same whole.

The word medicine in the Medicine Wheel does not mean medicine in the conventional sense of the word — pills or hospital care. It refers to a life force, or vital force, inseparably connected with nature and also present within us. It also refers to personal power, that enables us to grow and learn and leads us toward greater wholeness. Medicine is anything that has the power to touch us, influence us, teach us and change us.

The Medicine Wheel can therefore be understood as an outward expression of natural and spiritual laws. It is like a mirror in which we can see what is happening within us and where we currently find ourselves on our path through life. It helps us recognise our gifts, our shadows and the areas in which we can grow.

Through the yearly cycle of the Medicine Wheel, each year offers a new opportunity for natural personal and spiritual growth  if we are willing to connect with the rhythm of nature and allow it to guide us.

What can the directions of the Medicine Wheel teach us?

EAST symbolises spring, birth, childhood and new beginnings. It is a time of awakening, inspiration, creativity and the courage to set out on a new path. In the Medicine Wheel, the East encourages us to direct our energy consciously and listen to the voice of the heart.

SOUTH represents summer, and in human life, youth and the transition into adulthood. It is a time of vitality and action. It teaches us about emotions, closeness, love and relationships. It encourages us to act selflessly and reminds us that true growth is not possible without openness, touch, love and a willingness to give of ourselves to others.

WEST represents autumn and the period of maturity. It is a time of harvest, when we take stock of our lives, recognise what supports us and let go of what no longer serves us. It leads us towards introspection, inner transformation and personal strength. It reminds us of the importance of caring for our bodies. Through the body and our experience of the material world,  we are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and gradually develop wisdom.

NORTH represents winter and is a time of stillness. In human life, it represents old age and the wisdom gained through life experience. It teaches us acceptance, understanding of our experiences and the transformation of knowledge into wisdom.

And when we accept our life as it is, it becomes easier to let go of the old and make space for the new beginning that arrives with spring.
